Most ATM books and websites recommend a Pyrex® mirror blank, but in my opinion, annealed plate glass is better for this first, "learn and practice" mirror. It is cheaper, it is softer and grinds faster, needing less abrasives and with these small sizes, the low expansion glass like Pyrex has no practical

2019-8-19 · Re: Building a fixed post mirror grinding machine. I I had a nice piece of 3/4" stainless dowel that was begging to be used. So I bought a cheap pillow block to provide the locator for the metal dowel, and then drilled the overarm to fit. These pillow blocks are $8 and come complete with a locking collar great deal.

2011-11-1 · Basically there are two types of grinding/polishing machine. The ‘traditional’ type which involves the mirror rotating at a relatively slow speed, a few rpm for a big mirror (16-20 inches) with the tool moving across the mirror, from side to side, at a higher rpm depending on the size of the mirror and/or tool.
No personal experience of this, but I'll follow the thread with interest if someone chirps up. I'd come to same conclusions as you, looking at exam.On the RPM I think Gordon Waite is king of this stuff and his rough grinder seems to go at about 40, while his polishing seems slower. Should be in.That rotational speed seems a bit quick to me Steve. By "cutting to spherical" Do you mean you intend to hog the mirror blank with sub diameter too.Belts will give a smoother drive and "cut" than gears but might not be particularly important at this early stage. Fine grinding a certainly polish.Barkis Yes, we plan to hog while the mirror is face up with a smaller tool probably 2/3 size. I've been doing some simulations (don't ask to see.Gordon Waite certainly seems to get good results all the way through polishing on his fixed post machine. How much of that is his expert experience.I'm sure you'll do fine with the grinding Steve, I was just a little taken aback by the rotation speed, but as long as the mirror has three robust.Well I got set up, Used my new illuminated reticule eyepiece to mess with drift alignment. That's not as easy as I thought it was! I got questions.Basically there are two types of grinding/polishing machine. The ‘traditional’ type which involves the mirror rotating at a relatively slow speed,.Thx John That's a nice looking machine. ELID grinding of SiC ultra lightweight mirror
Silicon carbide (SiC) is the most advantageous as the material of various telescope mirrors, because SiC has high stiffness, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion and low density and so on [1] [2]. However, since SiC is very hard, it is difficult to obtain the surfaces efficiently by using ordinary grinding method. Therefore, we developed the ultra lightweight mirror by ELID
